The Healthy Deconversion Project

(Formerly The Faith Transitions Project)

Leaving your faith can be intensely painful.

Many individuals feel trapped within their religious community despite transitioning out of faith. There is often a high social cost associated with leaving and stigma attached to being a non-believer.

Symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD often accompany these faith transitions, yet many (1) don’t realize help is available (2) don’t know where to seek help (3) think it is risky to seek assistance.

Room to Thrive exists to provide a supportive space for individuals navigating faith transitions because we are intimately aware of the struggles that often accompany this life change.

The following services represent the early stages of our efforts to build a comprehensive array of support.

Coaching

It can be invaluable to share your experience with someone who understands what you are going through. However, coaching is not simply a supportive context or a listening ear. Brian Peck has adapted evidence-based principles to his coaching practice that target key psychological processes known to increase human well-being.

Fundamentalism is often characterized by rigid thinking, rule-governed behavior, external values, absolute certainty, and various other forms of inflexibility. It can be disorienting to transition away from this level of certainty and establish healthier ways of being in the world.

Our coaching sessions have a clear focus on improving psychological flexibility in the service of your chosen values.

Some individuals may require more than peer-support or coaching. As a licensed clinical social worker, Brian is sensitive to challenges that are best addressed clinically by a licensed professional. While he is unable to provide mental health therapy outside of Idaho where he is licensed, Brian will help you find a professional who is licensed in your area.

resources

This is one of the most exciting areas of the project! Over the past several years I have collaborated with a growing number of clinicians, researchers, and members of the secular/post-theist communities as well as members of various religious/spiritual traditions. Together, we are curating and developing resources to address the wide range of challenges surrounding faith transitions.

Resources will be added soon!
